It\u2019s not uncommon for my clients to have some big questions for me about eating fat. Some have been afraid they\u2019ll gain weight by eating too much or they do not know what types are good for their health. There\u2019s a lot of information out there, and some of it just isn\u2019t correct.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n So, let\u2019s uncover some of the true facts about dietary fat so you can fit it into your diet and lifestyle today.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n After consuming fats, your body will break them down and ultimately either use them to fuel functions and cells of the body or store them in fat cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fat is important for keeping our bodies operating right because it affects a lot of its processes, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Plus, healthy fats may also:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you\u2019re now understanding the importance of dietary fat for the body\u2019s functions but are still wondering about the whole \u201cfat-free\u201d craze. Are fats bad for weight loss? Do they cause weight gain? Let\u2019s address that right now.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n Some people are afraid of fat and think eating any type of it will lead to weight gain \u2014 the \u201cfat you eat is the fat you wear\u201d sort of mentality. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is a big myth we\u2019ve believed for years, starting with the low-fat movement in the \u201890s and unfortunately still continuing in some diets today.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re a busy, working professional like most of my clients \u2014 someone who hardly has enough time to schedule a snack during the day \u2014 you can really benefit from the satiety of healthy fats. You can enjoy that slow burn of energy during your work day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n But now this begs the question: what are healthy fats, and which ones do you actually need to avoid?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s been shown that the best approach is to eat a healthy mix of different kinds of fats. In case you don’t know (or recall from science class) there are 3 main types of fats: saturated fats (found in red meat, dairy, eggs), monounsaturated (nuts, avocado) and polyunsaturatated fat (flax, fish and seed oils). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n This last group, the <\/span><\/span>polyunsaturated fats also include the \u201cessential\u201d o<\/strong><\/span>mega 3 <\/strong>fatty acids. They are considered essential because your body cannot make it so it must be consumed in your diet. The best sources include flaxseed oil, fish, shellfish, krill or simply a fish oil supplement (like cod liver oil).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If all of that is starting to sounds a bit overwhelming, don’t worry. What is key is to ensure that you’re consuming this variety of fats from healthier sources (whole foods).And to avoid non-whole food, refined fat sources like non-perishable, factory produced food.
